The Peoria Civic Center has agreed to a five-year extension of its management agreement with ASM Global, running through 2028.
The renewal continues a partnership that started in 1990 and comes as the Civic Center is undertaking $45 million in capital improvement projects.
“When we were coming up on all these capital projects and knowing there was going to be – during renovations – some closings, that it would impact our bottom line,” said Civic Center general manager Rik Edgar, who is employed by ASM.
“But that (extension) was a vote for the current management team that, ‘we want you here; we want you to know that you don't have to worry about an RFP (request for proposal) or a bid. We're going to make sure that you guys are in place to see us through this process.’”
In a news release announcing the extension, Peoria Civic Center Authority board chair Yvonne Greer-Batton said they are “grateful for our past and excited about our future,” and that the long-term partnership has been mutually beneficial.
“This relationship will keep Peoria Civic Center on the cutting edge of events and entertainment, enhance the vitality of our region, and offer a higher quality of life for area residents and visiting patrons,” she said.
Edgar likened the contract renewal process to how sports teams handle extensions.
“Coaches like to get contract extensions, but don't like to be in a contract year,” he said. “I appreciate them recognizing what a great team we have, and keeping us on board at least through ’28.”
Financial terms of the extension were not disclosed.
