A Peoria County Sheriff's deputy suffered serious injuries after his vehicle was rear-ended on Interstate 74 on Tuesday afternoon.

The deputy was returning from a conference in Normal when the accident happened near milepost 107 in Tazewell County. The Illinois State Police say a driver tried to change lanes as it entered a construction zone and struck the deputy's vehicle. Both drivers lost control.

The deputy's squad vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest in a ditch on the side of the interstate.

The deputy was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria for treatment.

The driver of the other vehicle was 41-year-old Douglas Dodge of Ferndale, Wash. He received several citations from the Illinois State Police, including following too closely, driving too fast for conditions, improper lane usage, and unlawful possession of medical marijuana.
