Active COVID-19 cases in Peoria County have fallen to the lowest total since just before Thanksgiving, down from a variant-driven surge that peaked a little over a month ago.

Tri-County health officials on Monday reported 229 new coronavirus infections since the end of last week, pushing the region’s case count since the start of the pandemic to 91,160. The figure for new cases since Friday is almost 200 less than the previous weekend’s increase.

Currently, Peoria County has 34 residents in the hospital for COVID-19, and another 482 people isolating at home. That marks the fewest active cases since there were 486 on Nov. 22 — and down from a high of 4,170 on Jan. 11.

Woodford County’s caseload stands at 213, including 10 people in a hospital. That’s down from 281 active cases one week ago. Tazewell County’s hospitalization and home isolation figures are not available. Individuals who get a positive result from an at-home test kit are not included in the publicly reported totals.

Tazewell County reported two more COVID-19 fatalities since Friday, raising the region’s death toll since March 2020 to 1,091. Peoria County hasn't recorded a COVID-19 death since Wednesday, after logging 18 over the first nine days of February.

The latest figures from the Illinois Department of Public Health indicate 57.2% of Tri-County residents are fully vaccinated for COVID-19, and a little more than 61% of the population has received at least one shot.
