Tri-County COVID-19 caseload reaches 2021 high mark as the area's death toll climbs past 900

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Active COVID-19 cases in the Tri-County have topped 3,000 for the first time since the end of last year, with the area’s current surge resulting in 40 deaths tied to the pandemic since the day before Thanksgiving.

Public health departments in Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford counties on Monday reported 842 infections across the region over the weekend, bringing the total case count since the start of the pandemic to 63,287.

Tazewell County announced four fatalities since Friday and Peoria County logged two more, increasing the Tri-County’s COVID-19 death toll since March 2020 to 903.

Peoria-area hospitals are treating 60 patients with COVID-19, while another 3,008 infected Tri-County residents are isolating at home. That’s the most active cases reported in the region since 4,790 on Dec. 30.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), hospitals across Region 2 — which includes the Tri-County, Bloomington-Normal, and the Quad Cities — are down to 19 available intensive care unit beds available out of a possible 253.
