Southern Illinois University trustees have appointed a University of Alberta nanotechnology scientist as chancellor of the Carbondale campus.

Trustees during its meeting Thursday in Springfield approved SIU System President Randy Dunn's recommendation to appoint Carlo Montemagno to be the school's chancellor Montemagno is the first non-interim chancellor for the Carbondale campus since November 2014. He takes over on Aug. 15. Dunn will be acting chancellor until then.

Montemagno is an engineering professor who founded and leads the Canadian university's interdisciplinary Ingenuity Lab. He previously was a dean at the University of Cincinnati and a department chair at the University of California Los Angeles.

Montemagno was one of six candidates for the position. He has said he was interested in coming to Carbondale because he has a history leading organizations through periods of change.
