Elgin Community College predicts layoffs due to state budget

Officials at Elgin Community College say as many as 20 layoffs are coming due to anticipated funding shortfalls due to the lack of an Illinois state budget.  Layoffs will be among support workers saving about $480,000.

College President David Sam says the school's board is trying to keep the impact on students to a minimum. He says "for the first time we are faced with the possibility of a layoff."

College officials say discussion on which position to cut will start this week. The school has made other cuts as well.

Other area colleges also have been affected. College of Lake County in Grayslake eliminated 20 jobs in March. Harper College in Palatine will lay off 29 employees June 30.
