FARMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - Illinois State Police say a Farmington police officer shot a suspect in a domestic-battery investigation after the suspect repeatedly punched the officer in the head.
The incident happened Saturday afternoon when the officer pulled over the suspect while responding to a report of domestic battery.

State police say the suspect charged the officer and began striking the officer in the head. They say the officer then grabbed a pistol and fired one shot.

The suspect remained in the hospital Monday with a gunshot wound on his upper leg or groin area. The officer was released after being treated for bruises and evaluated for a concussion.

The suspect is expected to face charges. The officer is on paid leave while the shooting is investigated.
