Federal officials are warning the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency of environmental consequences after the state announced it will temporarily allow license plate renewals without emissions tests.
Last month, the IEPA announced it would stop mailing emissions test reminders because of Illinois' budget gridlock. Motorists with license plates that expire by the end of March won't receive notices. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White says he's allowing renewals temporarily to avoid an unfair burden to residents.
However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sent a Feb. 19 letter to Illinois officials saying the changes could "adversely impact air quality." Federal officials want more details about the changes.
