SIU-Carbondale ranked 23rd of universities with military ties

Southern Illinois University in Carbondale is among the most militarized schools in the nation. That’s according to a report published yesterday by VICE News.

The report looked at the number of alumni working in the intelligence community, the amount of funding supplied by national defense and security agencies and other factors.  Vice then came up with a list of the top 100 most militarized schools.

Rae Goldsmith, SIU’s public information officer, quibbled with the term “militarized,” but agreed with the ranking.

“Really what institutions like SIU are doing is trying to offer relevant degrees that meet workforce needs and serve members of our military community – veterans and active duty. So it’s painted as a negative but in fact it’s something we are rather proud of.”

Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign were ranked 80 and 83 respectively.
