Veterans' home continues search for source of deadly bacteria

Officials at the Illinois veterans' home where nine elderly residents have died from Legionnaires' disease say they still have not pinpointed the water-borne bacteria's source.

State and local public health workers along with a federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention team continue to investigate the outbreak. The bacteria has also sickened 40 residents and five workers at the state home in Quincy.

The 129-year-old home's age and size complicates the scientific sleuthing.  The 210-acre campus consists of dozens of buildings, both modern and aging.

Gov. Bruce Rauner says that steps such as disinfecting the home's drinking water and cleaning its air conditioning system have likely stopped the disease's further spread.  He also acknowledged that "we'll probably have more deaths" given the pneumonia-like illness' two-week incubation period.
