Police say slain officer was three-decade veteran

Authorities have identified the suburban Chicago police officer who was shot to death after chasing three men on foot.

Mayor Donny Schmit says that Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewitz had been with the Fox Lake Police Department for three decades and was the father of four sons.

The 52-year-old Gliniewitz was killed this morning in the small community about 55 miles north of Chicago.

After the shooting, scores of police officers from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies scoured the area in search of the three suspects.

Helicopters searched from the air and officers used bloodhounds to search on the ground.  Authorities urged residents to stay inside and had schools on lockdown.
