Illinois Prison on Lockdown After Assault That Injured Staff

State officials say a maximum security prison in southern Illinois remains on lockdown after a weekend assault that left staffers and inmates injured.  The staff assault happened Sunday at Menard Correctional Center.

Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman Nicole Wilson wouldn't disclose how many inmates or prison staffers were injured in the event. The injuries were not life threatening.  Wilson says inmates have been transferred to other correctional facilities and an investigation is underway.  She says the department will refer the case to the state's attorney for possible prosecution.

Menard is located along the Mississippi River about 60 miles south of St. Louis. No visits are allowed during lockdown.
