WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - Officials in a northern Illinois county are forming a task force to deal with increased activity by gangs they say are migrating to the area from Chicago.
Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said Wednesday his office is forming the Lake County Gang Task Force. He says federal and local law enforcement agencies will participate. In a news release, the sheriff's office says there are more than 1,100 documented gang members in Lake County. They say 86 percent are members of what are classified as Chicago-based gangs.
Undersheriff Raymond Rose says gangs are "evolving" and using technology to expand their networks and illegal activities across state and county lines. He says the task force also will work with faith-based, civic and parent groups to educate them about gangs.
