Adams County hit hard in Monday night storm

Jamie and Jason Parrott

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) - A powerful thunderstorm with winds as high as 70 mph tore through the Quincy area, toppling trees and power lines, damaging homes and knocking out power to thousands in Adams County.
In Quincy, the damage was so extensive after Monday night's storm that Mayor Kyle Moore declared a state of emergency and asked residents to remain in their homes unless they had a life-threatening emergency. A state of disaster was also issued in Adams County and the county's emergency management agency also was urging residents to stay home. Ameren Illinois spokeswoman Marcelyn Love says that more than 34,000 customers were without power at one time - with more than 20,000 of those customers in Quincy.
