Six venues bid for U of Illinois basketball games

Documents say six venues put in offers to host home games that will be played in Springfield for the displaced University of Illinois men's basketball team.

Venues in Bloomington, Hoffman Estates, Moline, Peoria and Rockford also sent in proposals to host the team for five November home games while the State Farm Center in Champaign is being renovated.

The university ultimately gave the contract to host the games to Springfield's Prairie Capital Convention Center, which is paying $325,000 per game but will keep ticket revenue.

University athletics spokesman Kent Brown says the school talked to the United Center in Chicago about playing games there, but that it will be hosting a circus at that time.
