SIU says state budget cuts would affect athletic programs

Southern Illinois University leaders hope the cuts coming in next year's state budget won't be as deep as Gov. Bruce Rauner has proposed but say sports will be among the programs affected.

Rauner's proposed state budget would cut $62 million from SIU's three campuses.

SIU President Randy Dunn said that none of SIU's campuses will be able to just raise tuition to make up for those losses.

He and interim Athletic Director Harold Bardo both said whatever cuts happen, sports teams at SIU's biggest campus in Carbondale campus will lose money.  The Salukis compete in 18 sports.
