The public memorial for Cubs legend Ernie Bank is Wednesday in downtown Chicago. Bill Savage teaches baseball and American culture at Northwestern University. He says there has already been a huge outpouring of emotion.
"From all over baseball, from both sides of town, from all sorts of fans it just shows what a great Chicagoan he was. He was the Studs Terkel of sports culture."
Banks died Friday of a heart attack. He spent his entire 19-year career playing on Chicago’s North Side. He was the Cubs’ first black player.
A statue of Banks will stand at Daley Plaza from Wednesday until Saturday.
