Rauner outlines Illinois' biggest problems

Governor Bruce Rauner is outlining what he sees as Illinois’ biggest problems. He picked an usual setting today to make his case. The governor spoke to a group of business school students.

Rauner gave a 28-slide PowerPoint presentation highlighting some of what he saw as Illinois’ problems to University of Chicago students. One slide showed a high number of people leaving Illinois. Another, fewer state government workers are making more money.

Rauner repeated that raising taxes won’t fix the state’s unsustainable costs. And he also touched on what he called a conflicted political system.

"We’re one of the few states that elects judges. Your average voter has no clue who they’re voting for. And trial lawyers are unlimited in their ability to make campaign contributions to judges. Hello? Hello? This is a problem."

A PAC for trial lawyers gave Rauner’s opponent in November’s election more than 150-thousand dollars. Rauner didn’t focus on solutions in his presentation.
