Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is leading the investigation into the recent security breaches of companies like Neiman Marcus, eBay and Sony. Madigan says these types of cyber-attacks are becoming more frequent and widespread.
“It really, I think is a wakeup call to take some action, make sure you’re watching over your bank account, your credit card account and your credit.”
She says Illinois has a law that requires retailers to immediately notify customers if their personal data has been compromised, but they don’t always follow through.
Madigan says people need to be vigilant about their personal data.
“You can’t just throw up your hands and do nothing. You have to take some proactive measures and make those part of your daily routine.”
Steps people can take include updating antivirus software, using complex passwords, and restricting the use of remote computer access.
Earlier this week, the U.S.Department of Homeland Security revealed that more than 1,000 business across the nation have been affected by some form of data breach.
