A Cook County judge is expected to give a ruling Friday that could affect the fate of a lawsuit attempting to legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois. IPR’s Tony Arnold reports.
25 couples filed a lawsuit last year claiming Illinois’ ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.
But defenders of the current law say the case should be thrown out altogether - before the case even goes to trial.
Peter Breen is an attorney arguing for keeping the ban on same-sex marriage in place.
BREEN: The issue is providing a mom and a dad for as many kids as possible because moms bring something different to a child’s rearing than a dad does.
Breen says if the 25 couples want to get married - they should look to the state legislature to legalize same-sex marriage, not the courts.
But so far - the votes haven’t been there to pass same-sex marriage in the state House.
Supporters are planning a march on Springfield when the legislature returns next month.
