An apartment fire in Peoria was started by a child playing with a lighter.

Fire officials in Peoria say a child playing with a lighter caused a fire at an apartment on Sunday morning.According to a news release from the Peoria Fire Department, firefighters and paramedics were called to a fire at a two-story apartment in the 2700 block of West Trewyn Avenue around 8:10 a.m.

Battalion chief Ralph Phillips said firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the building. Crews had the fire under control within five minutes, but one apartment sustained heavy fire damage to the first floor and smoke damage throughout the second floor, according to Phillips.

The fire department said one adult and four children live in the department. The Red Cross was called to help the family. The department said no one was hurt.

The fire department estimated $15,000 in damages.

The Peoria Housing Authority owns the building, according to the fire department.
