14 More COVID-19 Cases Confirmed At Peoria County Jail

Peoria County

The COVID-19 outbreak is worsening at the Peoria County Jail, with 14 new cases confirmed Wednesday.Sheriff Brian Asbell said this brings the total of confirmed positive cases among detainees to 22. Testing or results are still pending on another 180 inmates.

Asbell said he's meeting with State's Attorney Jodi Hoos and 10th Circuit Chief Judge Paul Gilfillan this afternoon to talk about the impact on the courts and new jail intakes. Notably, the ongoing murder trial of Jermontay Brock, 18, was pushed back to August on Wednesday due to the COVID-19 concerns at the jail. He's charged in a 2018 double homicide on Bradley Avenue.

Thirteen employees also are off work due to COVID-19 concerns, including positive test results, pending tests, or quarantine due to exposure, Asbell said.

The Peoria County Sheriff's Office is working with both the Peoria City/County Health Department and Wellpath, the jail's inmate healthcare provider, Asbell said.
