Health Officials Say COVID-19 Spike in Phase 4 Was Expected, Manageable So Far

Monica Hendrickson, adiministrator of the Peoria City/Council Health Department.

Local COVID-19 cases are increasing in the Peoria area.

Peoria City/County Health Department Administrator Monica Hendrickson said that's to be expected as more things began reopening under Phase 4.

"What we want to be sure we are monitoring, is that that increase in cases doesn't outstride our capacity as a local health care department, as well as a local health care system," she said.

So far, she said the system is able to handle the increased caseload, with overall low hospital utilization for confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases. Hendrickson said contact tracing efforts are still keeping up with demand.

She said the 4th of July weekend and more summer traveling in general also play a factor. More than 1,200 people were tested at the Civic Center site alone in the three days following the holiday.

The wider North-Central region's positivity rate is 3%.
