Grocery Stores Taking New Precautions, But Still Open and Hiring

HyVee Sheridan Village Manager Elise Schiel and Grand Prairie Manager Eric Gharst

Grocery stores are still open under Gov. J.B. Pritzker's shelter-in-place order.

Elise Schiel is manager of the Hy-Vee at Sheridan Village. She said extra precautions are in place to keep both customers and employees safe from the coronavirus.

"Everything is being sanitized. Sometimes it's every 15 minutes in some categories, like the belts, and the PIN pads, and the bathrooms is multiple times an hour," she said.

Both Peoria Hy-Vee stores are also installing Plexiglass windows at the checkout lanes this coming week. Reusable bags are temporarily banned.

The store managers said the supply chain is still running smoothly, and are encouraging patrons not to hoard food or other items.

The Hy-Vee on Sheridan is currently hiring about 20 new temporary employees. The Grand Prairie location is looking to pick up about 10 new workers to help out with the increased demand. Kroger and other grocery chains are also hiring.
