'Solar For All' Push Comes To Peoria County

The new Illinois Solar For All program is coming to Peoria County.

The program targets low-income and environmental justice communities.

"People are able to get either a solar installation or participate in a subscription service called Community Solar," said Michael Brown with the Normal-based Ecology Action Center. "And it's designed to help them save money on their electricity bill."

The Community Solar program is geared towards renters who may not be able to mount solar panels onto their building.

The program is generally open to families making up to 80% of the area median income. The solar energy should cost people enrolled in the program no more than 50% of the power's value. Illinois Solar For All is faciliated as part of the 2017 Future Energy Jobs Act.

Brown said the solar programs have been successful in McLean County, and he thinks that success can be replicated here.

Contact the Ecology Action Center for more information.

Editor's note: We said the program is open to families making up to 80 percent of the federal average income. It is actually 80 percent of the area median income. We apologize for the error.
