Rivers are rising across the Midwest after multiple days of heavy rainfall.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for local portions of the Illinois River. The river’s stage in Peoria Tuesday night was 16.4 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet. Water is expected to surpass flood stage Wednesday and crest near 23.5 feet by Monday. Forecasters warn the river could continue to rise beyond Monday. Water begins to cover some East Peoria streets when it reaches 24 feet.
Flood warnings are in effect for portions of the Spoon River in Fulton and Knox counties.
Residents in eastern Iowa and western Illinois are bracing for near-record flooding along the Mississippi River. The river is expected to crest in Rock Island Wednesday. The crest in Davenport, Iowa - across the river from Rock Island - is expected to fall just shy of the record set in July 1993.
