A winter storm brought a mix of snow and freezing rain to Illinois, coating some parts of the state with icy accumulations.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for portions of the Peoria Public Radio listening area late Monday. Ice accumulations in northern Peoria County and areas west toward the Quad Cities shuttered schools and slowed the morning commute. Traffic collision alerts were in effect for Peoria and Tazewell counties Tuesday morning.
A wide portion of central Illinois is under a wind advisory from Noon Tuesday until 3:00 a.m. Wednesday. That includes Peoria, Tazewell, Woodford, Knox, Marshall, McLean, Henry and Fulton counties. Winds are expected to increase Tuesday to 25-35 mph with gusts as high as of 40-50 mph.
Forecasters say high winds could make travel difficult, especially on north-south oriented roads. Minor tree damage is also possible.
The National Weather Service in Lincoln says rain chances return Thursday evening, followed by the possibility of snow on Friday.
