Illinois' Congressional Representatives Support Measured Approach on US Action in Syria

A republican and democratic member of the Illinois congressional delegation are encouraging a “wait and see” approach to Syria, after last night’s US missile strikes.

Democratic Congresswoman Cheri Bustos says Donald Trump’s actions were an appropriate response to Bashar Al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons.

But Bustos says further action in Syria should require congressional approval.

“We don’t want to be into another trillion dollar war, another protracted war without a game plan,” Bustos said.

Additionally, Bustos says the President should change course on immigration and allow Syrian refugees fleeing war to enter the US.

Peoria Congressman Darin LaHood (IL-R) speaking at the naturalization ceremony Friday in Peoria.

Republican Congressman Darin LaHood says Europe, Russia and Iran should “come to the table” to resolve the crisis in Syria.

“And I think in the end, you’ll end up with a divided Syria with a country that will end up three separate countries or maybe two different countries. That’s the path I think we’re on," LaHood said. "But first and foremost before we can even get there, we have to stop the type of violence that has occurred with chemical weapons.”

LaHood went on to say he thinks establishing government with a power-sharing agreement would lead to a more stable Syria.

UNICEF reports it has so far identified about 5 million refugees attempting to escape Syria. That number includes those who have fled to nearby countries including Jordan and Turkey.
