Peoria Prepares to Replace an Aged Bridge

Peoria Public Works Department

The MacArthur Highway Bridge Replacement Project got more public attention last night when residents had the opportunity to see the two options for it.

One offers a left turn on Richard Allen for those heading south and would not have a southbound exit ramp onto Saratoga. That’s I-DOT’s preferred design, as it provides more pedestrian safety. The second option rebuilds the south exit ramp to get to Romeo Garrett Avenue and moves the sidewalks.

The bridge replacement project stretches from MLK Drive to Richard Allen and will cost an estimated $5.5 million.

The 75-year-old concrete bridge has cracking concrete on the faces of some of its columns and calcium formed stalactites are visible when driving under it. It also has a weight limit, making it off limits to semis.

The construction project is expected to begin in about a year. In the meantime, people can vote for their favorite design here.

Another public meeting is planned at 5:30p.m. Wednesday at Trewyn Middle School. It covers the Folkers Avenue replacement project.
