Some relief for South Peoria’s food-desert issue

An outlet center on Peoria’s South Side is officially offering groceries next month.  Peoria Public Radio’s Alex Rusciano reports the news comes after a different grocery store left last year:

After the Aldi on Western Avenue closed, First District Peoria City councilwoman Denise Moore said the departure meant the Southside neighborhood would be a food desert.  But the UFS store on Southwest Adams is officially opening a grocery section April 1st.  Store manager Gerard Wiegand says the expansion hopes to tackle the lack of grocery options with dairy products and canned goods:

“Down on the South Side of Peoria, there’s no place to get a gallon of milk. You know, you can’t get a dozen eggs, the bare necessities, and that’s something we’re trying to provide to our customers here at UFS.

Wiegand (WEE-gind) says the grocery addition had a soft launch last month.
