East Peoria officials are celebrating the groundbreaking of a new city hall. The city council approved building a new facility in the Levee District last month.

It will be nine-thousand square feet and cost two million dollars to construct. East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus says the current facility is about 75-years old and in need of major repairs.

“Poor air conditioning, the leaks, toilets overflowing, tiles falling down, power outages and just numerous things: the council just found it to be much more cost effective to do a new building.”

Mingus says half the construction cost of the new city hall will be paid for through the sale of the old facility and former library building. New retail sales receipts will take care of the rest of the funding. The new city hall will be completed at the end of this year.
