Ameren officials have activated their emergency operations center following the severe weather that ravaged portions of central Illinois Sunday, rendering some 140,000 residents powerless at the peak of the storms. Utility crews have focused on the cities of Washington, Pekin, Bloomington and as far east as Danville after the tornados and high winds damaged service lines. At 10:00pm Sunday, roughly 42,000 residents in Tazewell, Woodford, Peoria and McLean counties remain without electricity, while additional dangers exist for those customers with damaged homes and businesses.
Safety Tips
Ameren warns everyone to stay clear of downed power lines, and leaky natural gas lines in the aftermath of any tornado or storm. If you smells natural gas or notices a downed wire, please call Ameren immediately at 1-800-755-5000. Stay inside, and stay clear of trees, shrubs and brush that may hide power lines.
