This report has been updated with additional information after Peoria Police reported late Friday that both the woman and the man had died.

A female victim and a male suspect are dead after Peoria Police officers exchanged fire with a gunman who allegedly shot the woman Friday night in Downtown Peoria.

It happened around 6:45 p.m. near the intersection of Hamilton and Madison streets, police said. That's near the Four Points by Sheraton hotel, the federal courthouse, and other downtown landmarks.

Police initially responded to a domestic dispute in the area. The woman involved in the domestic dispute was found shot, police said. A Peoria officer encountered the suspect and shots were fired. The suspect was struck by gunfire and transported to the hospital, police said. No officers were injured.

Peoria Police reported late Friday that both the woman and the man were later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Their identities and official cause of death have not yet been released by Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.

As is customary with officer-involved shootings, Illinois State Police is leading the investigation. Once the investigation is complete, State Police say the case will be turned over to the Peoria County state’s attorney for review.
