A 17-year-old male has been arrested on three charges related to the fatal shooting of another 17-year-old at a Peoria apartment complex over the weekend.
Peoria police say an interview Monday at department headquarters identified the 17-year-old as a suspect in the incident. A news release Tuesday afternoon from the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s office indicated both teens were participating in a planned home invasion.
Matthew Day died after suffering multiple gunshot wounds Saturday night at Lexington Hills Apartments on the city’s west side. A 21-year-old man was also wounded during the crime.
Officers responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m. on a call of shots fired. Day was found unresponsive in one apartment unit, while the unnamed adult was located in neighboring unit with bullet wounds to his legs.
Following the police interview, the teen suspect was subsequently taken into custody and arrested for aggravated battery, home invasion, and armed robbery.
Prosecutors say messages on the boys’ phones show they were coordinating the invasion, along with plans to stage the suspect as a victim. The teen allegedly admitted the messages were his during the police interview.
Police say the investigation remains active and ongoing.
