Judge imposes maximum sentence in fatal hit-and-run case

A Peoria man convicted in a fatal hit-and-run crash in 2023 was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison.

Peoria County Circuit Judge Paul Bauer gave John Timothy Jr., 41, the maximum sentence for causing the death of Akeem Alexander, 28.

According to a media release from the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office, Bauer acknowledged the pain of Alexander’s family and agreed there should be real consequences for taking a life and leaving the scene.

In July, a jury convicted Timothy of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving death. Evidence indicated the detection service in Timothy’s vehicle initiated a 911 call to report a crash around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 28, 2023.

Officers responded to the 1900 block of West Howett Street and found Alexander face down in the road, with a bicycle nearby. Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene, but Timothy’s vehicle was not there.

Police later found the Land Rover on Antoinette Street with heavy damage to the front end. Video footage showed Timothy leaving a nearby club minutes before the crash, speeding through a stoplight and striking Alexander before departing the area.

Timothy will receive credit for 114 days already served in custody. His attorney filed a motion to reconsider the sentence, and a hearing is scheduled for Dec. 22.
