Peoria Police are investigating a shooting in which a driver was found dead and a passenger was found wounded inside a vehicle.

Officers were called around 8:18 p.m. Sunday to the 3200 block of North Isabell Avenue after a report that a man had been shot inside a car.

Police found the vehicle had crashed into a traffic sign at the intersection of Isabell and Merle.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood identified the victim as 20-year-old Elisha Gilbert of Peoria. In a social media post, Harwood said Gilbert suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died instantly.

Police said Gilbert had been shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police also said an 18-year-old female passenger suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and was hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life threatening.

The Peoria Police Department said they have no suspect information and the investigation is ongoing.

The department said it’s looking for help from community members and businesses in the area to check any video footage for suspicious persons or vehicles in the area from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Anyone with information is asked to call department investigators at (309) 494-8480, offer tips anonymously through tip411 or by calling Crime Stoppers at [309] 673-9000.
