Peoria man handed maximum sentence in fatal DUI

A gavel rests on a judge's bench in a blurry courtroom. The text "WCBU Courts" sits on top of that photo.

A Peoria man has been given a 14-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of aggravated driving while intoxicated causing death.

Vanda Terrell, 53, received the maximum punishment allowed for causing the February 2024 crash that took the life of Peoria resident Wardrick Millburn, 46, according to a media release from the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office.

With Millburn’s family members in court for Wednesday’s sentencing, Assistant State’s Attorney Deb Shelby argued for the strongest sentence possible. She said Terrell “earned” the punishment by choosing to drive recklessly while under the influence of both alcohol and marijuana.

According to the media release, Terrell was speeding at nearly twice the 30 mph limit and ran multiple stop signs before colliding with Millburn’s vehicle. A test of Terrell’s blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) produced a result above the .08 legal limit.

Terrell will be required to serve 85% of his sentence at an Illinois Department of Corrections facility.
