Man convicted of stealing car with child inside in Peoria sentenced to 15 years in prison

A gavel rests on a judge's bench in a blurry courtroom. The text "WCBU Courts" sits on top of that photo.

An Ohio man who spurred a widescale manhunt last fall after stealing a car with a child inside will serve 15 years in prison.

Authorities said Victor Farris, 46, stole a car from Enterprise Car Rental on Pioneer Parkway on Sept. 4 — with the 3-year-old still in the vehicle.

The child's uncle told police the child was in a car seat in the back and he was sitting in the driver's seat when Farris approached. Farris, who was wearing business attire, said he worked for Enterprise and told the man he needed to go back inside. When the man stepped out of the car, Farris jumped in and drove off.

The child was found unharmed at a Bartonville gas station shortly afterwards, but Farris eluded police for 12 days. He was arrested at a train depot in Monroe County, Iowa.

Farris will serve a 15-year sentence for aggravated vehicle carjacking concurrently with a seven-year kidnapping sentence.
