The Peoria Citizens Committee for Economic Opportunity announced Thursday it terminated several employees for alleged illegal distribution of gift cards.

The Peoria Citizens Committee for Economic Opportunity [PCCEO] fired "several" employees and is investigating alleged improper distribution of gift cards.

Interim President and CEO John Edwards said the social service organization uncovered “improprieties” that led to the terminations in a prepared statement Thursday morning.

“We expect law enforcement will investigate this thoroughly to determine if there are any criminal charges to be brought against former employees,” he said. “As a result, information on social media is spreading unchecked about what transpired with the situation. PCCEO continues to investigate the breadth and depth of the incident.”

Edwards would not comment further on any details beyond the statement, including the number of employees fired.

Peoria Police Department spokesperson Semone Roth confirmed to WCBU the department is investigating the incident.

“Ultimately, what we do for the community in Peoria County is to improve the quality of life for the citizens here. And so we are totally, 100% pursuing our mission,” Edwards said. “And it is unfortunate that we had this situation occur.”
