Yellow police tape stretches across a blurry crime scene. It says "Police Line Do Not Cross." The text "WCBU Police and Fire" lays on top of that photo.

A man is dead after exchanging gunfire with a Chillicothe police officer Tuesday night.

The police officer pulled over an allegedly stolen vehicle in the 1800 block of North Finney Street, according to a release from the Illinois State Police.

Police say the driver, identified as Marvin Martin III, 50, of Peoria, and the officer then shot at each other just before 10:30 p.m.

The officer was injured and brought to an area hospital. The Chillicothe Police Department says the officer's injuries are non life-threatening.

First responders attempted to save Martin, but he died from his injuries. The Peoria County Coroner said he was shot multiple times in the front and died instantly. Nobody else was in the vehicle.

As required by law, the incident is under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
