A 29-year-old Peoria man died Monday morning after a shooting incident on the city’s South Side.

In a social media post, Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said an autopsy on Roy L. Payne indicates he suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and died instantly.

Payne's death is Peoria’s seventh homicide of 2023, and the third in the last 10 days.

According to Peoria Police Department spokesperson Semone Roth, officers responded to a four-round ShotSpotter alert at 8:45 a.m. in the 1800 block of South Westmoreland Avenue.

They found Payne with apparent gunshot wounds inside a vehicle that had crashed into a utility pole. He was treated at the scene by first responders, then taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Harwood said Payne was pronounced dead shortly before 10 a.m.

Peoria police units continue to investigate the shooting. No arrests have been made and no suspect information is currently available.
