A 22-year-old woman was pronounced brain dead Sunday after being shot inside a Dunlap apartment — allegedly by the father of her children.

Alexis Boland of Princeville had been in critical condition at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. She was critically injured in the shooting Friday morning at the apartment in the 12300 block of North Brentfield in Dunlap, authorities said.

Boland is an organ donor. An autopsy will follow organ procurement, according to the Peoria County coroner.

Meanwhile, charges are pending against Walter Artis, 26, who allegedly shot Boland and fled the scene. He was later arrested at a gas station in Morton. Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins said Artis had a handgun when he was arrested. The sheriff said Boland and Artis have children together.

Before Boland's death, Artis faced preliminary charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, home invasion, aggravated domestic battery, and no valid FOID card. More charges could be added.
