Peoria's North Valley rocked by explosions late Monday night

Peoria Fire Department

Explosions in Peoria's North Valley late Monday night led to the emergency demolitions of two buildings.

Peoria Fire Department battalion chief Tom Stimeling said crews responded to a fire at 823 NE Monroe around 9:45 p.m. The fire extended to an adjacent apartment building at 819 NE Monroe.

The six occupants of the buildings evacuated safely before firefighters arrived. Nobody was injured.

Shortly after crews arrived, Stimeling said there were two explosions. A 2-11 alarm was pulled. Two aerial ladder trucks were sent to the scene. The full compliment of Peoria firefighters on shift worked on the fire through a rotation.

A city building inspector ordered the emergency demolitions of both buildings due to extensive fire damage.

A fire investigator is looking into the cause and origin of the fire and explosions.
