Peoria police investigating death of 8-year-old

Peoria police are investigating the death of an 8-year-old child.

Officers responded to the 1700 block of North Gale Street just before 2:45 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a child not breathing.

The child was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in critical condition, where the child was later pronounced dead. The child was later identified as Navin Jones.

Police later arrested Stephanie Jones, 35; and Brandon Walker, 40, in connection with the child's death. Peoria police spokesperson Semone Roth said they are the parents of Navin Jones.

Peoria Public Schools spokesperson Thomas Bruch said Jones wasn't a student of a District 150 school.

Officers with the police department's criminal investigations unit and crime scene unit are investigating the death.

The Peoria County Coroner's Office has ruled the death a homicide. The preliminary cause of death is physical abuse and neglect. The coroner characterized it as one of the worst abuse cases he's seen.

Anyone with information is asked to call Peoria police or CrimeStoppers, or use the tip411 service.
