A Peoria infant's death by fentayl intoxication is under investigation as a homicide.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says 9-month-old Kaine Santana H. Wolford was reported unresponsive and not breathing in the early hours of July 26.

The baby was pronounced dead an hour later. Harwood said there's no evidence of a significant natural disease, congenital abnormality, or trauma that could have caused the death.

Toxicology results showed the cause of death was fentanyl, a powerful opioid.

The child's mother, 19-year-old Zenai Wolford, is charged in connection with the death.
