1 person dead in Peoria house fire

Peoria IL Fire Department

One person is dead after a house fire early Thursday morning in Peoria.

Peoria first responders were called to 903 W. Thrush just after 6 a.m. They found smoke and flames coming from the front window of the home.

The Peoria County Coroner's Office was notified after a person was found inside with injuries "not consistent with life," said authorities.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says 40-year-old Deshawn Jones of 903 West Thrush died after a fire in his home.

Jones died from carbon monoxide poisoning due after inhaling smoke and soot. Harwood said extensive burns were likely sustained after he died.

Toxicology is pending.

The fire was contained to one room. Damages to the home are estimated at $150,000. A second flare-up of smoldering embers on Friday caused another $20,000 in damages.

The cause of the original fire is still undetermined.
