On the brink of tax season, the process determining your property tax bill can feel opaque and frustrating. Peoria Township wants to ease some of that stress.

The former Peoria township supervisor applied for unemployment benefits after losing his race for re-election two years ago. He erroneously received more than $15,000 in benefits. The current supervisor fought for months to claw back the funds owed to the township.

A referendum will ask voters in Peoria Township whether federal and state districts should be drawn up by an independent citizens commission rather than politicians.

The Peoria City Council has approved a motion, on a 7-3 vote, to maintain the 2020 township tax levy — going against a township official's recommendation for an increase.
