A plan to close the wage gap between men and women sailed through the Illinois Legislature last year, but Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed it. Now, the measure is back.
Democratic Rep. Anna Moeller has introduced legislation that would forbid employers from asking applicants their salary history. She says the law would prevent lower wages from following women throughout their careers.
But there's also a competing plan.
Democratic Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant has a similar measure, but it's stripped of punitive penalties for violators. She wants a more lenient measure that could survive a veto from the Republican governor.
Rob Karr is with the Illinois Retail Merchants Association. Karr backs Bertino-Tarrant's plan, which requires companies accused of unfair wage practices to undergo self-evaluations to measure gap-closure progress.
