Warren Buffett's Son to Become Illinois County Sheriff

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett's son is to become the interim sheriff of Macon County in central Illinois.

Macon County Sheriff Thomas Schneider said in a statement that he is retiring early ahead of an election next fall for his replacement. Howard Buffett has been a Macon County undersheriff since September 2014 and has completed more than 3,300 hours of patrol and training. He said in the same news release that he looks forward to serving "in a broader capacity."

Buffett is to be sworn into office Friday afternoon. Officials say he's to immediately begin full-time office hours as sheriff.

The Macon County seat is Decatur, about 170 miles (273.58 kilometers) southwest of Chicago. Buffett's foundation has contributed more than $55 million in the region over the past two decades.
