Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza visited Herrin in southern Illinois Monday, to hear from medical doctors what late insurance payments mean to their practice.
In a packed conference room at the Orthopaedic Institute of Southern Illinois, Mendoza heard from CEO Greg Thompson - who says even though they have never missed a payroll, sometimes the physicians haven given up their own pay, so staff can get paid.
Mendoza says the answer is to immediately enact a bonding authorization deal, something Governor Bruce Rauner opposes. Failing that, Mendoza says the red ink will pile up fast.
CEO Thompson said the Orthopaedic Institute is owed six million dollars on some claims from 2015.
